Transformers in Packaging

The original Transformers G1 toy line launched in 1984 and featured transforming robots from the popular animated television series inspired by Takara's Diaclone and Microman toyline. These toys were revolutionary at the time, as it was the first toy line to feature robots that change their appearance completely.

The G1 line was one of the longest-lived Transformers toy lines ever, with over 290 figures made between 1984 and 1990. While the early Transformers toys were heavily focused on vehicles such as cars, trucks, and planes, later additions to the line included animal-based robots, dinosaurs, and other creatures. Hasbro had toy licensing of Marvel Comics superheroes which made two figures live-action series star robots, Optimus Prime and Megatron, inspired by figures of Marvel popular heroes such as Iron Man, Wolverine, Dracula, and Spider-Man.

The G1 Transformers line included a large variety of robot action figures with different play modes. Most figures could transform in one or two steps, while the larger figures such as Metroplex and Ultra Magnus could take several steps to completely change their shape. Most versions of the the G1 Transformers came with weapons, accessories, and instructions, and were packaged in boxes or bubbles (married to card stock for sale). There were also special "gift sets" of several figures available.

In the 1990s, the G1 toys were succeeded by the G2 series, and the Transformers brand continues to release new action figures, aimed at a broader age range. The original G1 toys continue to be popular with both children and adult collectors, and are highly sought after by vintage toy collectors.
